Early Bronco C4 Automatic Transmission Guide

Early Bronco C4 Automatic Transmission Guide

From 1973-77, the Ford C4 3-speed automatic transmission was offered as an option in the Early Bronco, while 1966-72 models came standard with a 3-speed manual. The C4 quickly became a popular choice across many Ford platforms thanks to its simplicity, durability, and strong aftermarket support. Today, it remains a go-to transmission for everything from daily drivers to rock-crawling builds.

Pan-Fill vs Case-Fill C4

Early Bronco C4 transmissions were pan-fill units, meaning fluid is added through a dipstick tube that enters the transmission pan. Ford also produced a case-fill C4, where fluid enters through the transmission case—but this version was never used in the Bronco.

Flexplate & Component Compatibility

The Early Bronco C4 used a 164-tooth flexplate with a 28-ounce imbalance. Matching components is critical:

  • Bellhousing and torque converter must match the flexplate

  • Case-fill C4s may use 157- or 164-tooth flexplates, but differ in design

Using the wrong combination can lead to fitment or performance issues, so proper identification is important when sourcing parts.

Transmission & Transfer Case Combinations

The C4 is commonly paired with either a Dana 20 or an Atlas 2 transfer case:

  • C4 Transmission: ~11" length

  • Bellhousing: ~6" length

With Dana 20:

  • Transfer case: ~11.25"

  • Adapter: ~7.375"

With Atlas 2:

  • Transfer case: ~13.75"

  • Adapter: ~3"

Despite the Atlas being longer, the shorter adapter results in an overall setup that is roughly 2 inches shorter than the Dana 20 combination.

Flare Case vs Step Case C4

Early Broncos used a “flare case” C4, which includes:

  • Pan-mounted dipstick

  • 164-tooth flexplate

  • Unique bellhousing bolt pattern

The “step case” C4 differs with:

  • Case-mounted dipstick

  • Typically a 157-tooth flexplate

  • Different bolt pattern

It’s important to match your bellhousing and components to the correct case style.

Converting to a C4 Automatic

If you’re swapping from a manual transmission, you’ll need several supporting components:

  • C4 transmission with bellhousing

  • Torque converter

  • Automatic transmission starter

  • Transmission cooler and lines

  • Shifter (column or floor)

  • Transfer case input shaft

  • Neutral safety switch and wiring

  • Automatic pedal assembly

  • Carburetor modifications may be needed for kick-down linkage

With the right parts and setup, the Early Bronco C4 automatic transmission is a reliable and capable option. Whether you're rebuilding a stock system or planning a full conversion, proper component matching and planning will ensure the best results.
