Early Bronco Wiper Systems: Vacuum vs. Electric

Early Bronco Wiper Systems: Vacuum vs. Electric

Keeping your windshield clear is critical, but the design of the wiper system changed quite a bit over the Early Bronco production run. Understanding the differences between the early vacuum setup and the later electric system will help you choose the right parts—or plan an upgrade that actually works the way you expect.

66-68 Ford Bronco Wipers

The 1966-68 Ford Bronco came equipped with dual vacuum-operated wiper motors mounted directly to the windshield frame. These motors were powered by engine vacuum supplied through the fuel pump and controlled individually by small levers on each motor.

While simple in design, vacuum wipers had a major drawback: performance dropped under load. As engine vacuum decreased—like when accelerating or climbing—wiper speed would slow or even stop. Add in age and wear, and these systems are widely known for inconsistent operation and limited reliability.

69-77 Ford Bronco Wipers

Starting in 1969, Ford made a significant upgrade by switching to a single electric wiper motor with a two-speed function. This motor used a transmission linkage system to drive both wiper arms in sync.

This design solved the biggest issues found in the earlier vacuum setup. The electric motor delivered consistent performance regardless of engine load, and the synchronized movement improved overall windshield coverage. For most owners, this system is far more dependable and better suited for real-world driving conditions.

Converting 66-68 Broncos to Electric Wipers

Because of the limitations of vacuum wipers, many 1966-68 Broncos have already been converted to electric systems. This can be done using factory-style 69-77 Bronco components or with aftermarket electric wiper conversion kits designed specifically for early models.

One important detail to keep in mind: the windshield frames are different. On 66-68 Broncos with vacuum wipers, the mounting holes for the wiper arms are positioned slightly differently than on 69-77 electric wiper frames. This difference can affect fitment when mixing components, so it’s something to account for when planning a conversion or replacement.
