Problem: Excessive Steering Wheel Play

If you’re noticing a lot of slack in your steering wheel, here are the key areas to inspect:

• Caster Angle: Have a reputable alignment shop verify your caster angle. If it’s off, your C-bushings may need to be replaced.

• Steering Linkage: Check both the tie rod and drag link for wear or looseness.

• Steering Box Mounting: Ensure the steering box is securely fastened to the frame. Any movement here can make the steering feel vague or sloppy.

• Frame Integrity: The frame at the steering box mount is a high-stress area. Over time, it can weaken or even develop cracks.

WARNING: Never adjust the “play adjusting screw” (located on top of the steering box) more than one full turn in. Doing so jams the sector shaft into the piston, which can damage the steering box internally.

Problem: Front-End Shimmy or "Death Wobble"

If the front end is shaking violently—especially after hitting a bump—this is often referred to as the infamous death wobble. Here’s what to look for:

• Track Bar Bushings: The #1 cause is usually worn-out upper track bar bushings. Inspect the bushings and ensure the bolt and bolt hole aren’t worn out.

• Tires: Out-of-balance or worn-out tires are a common culprit. Replace or balance as needed.

• Wheel Bearings: Check your front wheel bearings. They should be cleaned, inspected, and greased on a regular basis to prevent shake or looseness.
