Product Overview:

Finally a simple bolt-on Saginaw power steering pump kit for your full size Ford 351M/400. This new kit includes everything you need with the exception of the belt due to variation in pulley sizes found on the stock motors. As pictured we include a new (not rebuilt) Saginaw/Delphi steering pump, power steering pressure hose, pump pulley, pump bracket, pump bracket brace, adjustment link and hardware. This kit works with or without A/C. Brand new Heavy Duty Delphi pump Do you really want to settle for a twenty-five year old rebuilt Saginaw pump? We hate defects. You hate defects. So, why buy used stuff when you can have new? Our heavy duty Delphi pumps put out more pressure and pump more GPM (gallons per minute) than the factory units and they have a large reservoir for added fluid capacity.
We use plated reservoirs as a standard feature. Not only do they look better but the plating adds superior corrosion resistance.
We sold rebuilt pumps for many years. We pulled our hair out trying to find a good source for rebuilt pumps. We used practically everyone in the business. No matter where we went, it was always the same - about one in ten didn't work right. With the volume of time and money spent on returns, this was unacceptable. Defects, even when handled correctly, do not reflect well for our customer service standards. For a long time, rebuilts were our only option. A few years ago, we received the opportunity to provide brand new pumps. We jumped on board wholeheartedly and have not looked back since. The pumps you see here are built exclusively for WILD HORSES. We are convinced you will not find better anywhere in the market place.
All of WH's Delphi pumps use a .750 shaft with a press fit pulley. For the best possible performance, WILD HORSES recommends using power steering fluid in all of our steering components.

This kit is designed for use on 78-79 Broncos and 77-79 F-150 4x4 with 351M/400M with or without A/C.

Asked by Chad, November 7, 2023

Q: Hello what is the pressure fitting size and type on the back of the pump? I swapped a 2004 f350 axle and steering box into my 1979 f250 with a 400m. I am running a mid 90's ford stock pump that is the same size and type as the 79 but has metric fittings. If it is the standard fitting do you have an adapter available?

1 Answer

Answered by sales - November 13, 2023

A: The pump takes a 5/8 -18 tpi, inverted flare fitting. We have a few fittings like # F2964 and F2463. If you need something different, then you may need to find one yourself.

Asked by Witt, April 20, 2021

Q: Will this kit work for a 81 F150 351m stock?

1 Answer

Answered by sales - April 21, 2021

A: It would be our closest option, but may only give you a better place to start. Also, it may bolt right on, but is not specifically designed for your year. Best bet, compare your motor to the installation pics, to try to confirm as much as possible. Other than that, you could try.

Asked by Greg, April 24, 2020

Q: I have a 1977 f150 with a 400m. I have 2 hoses in my stock system. I only see one hose in the kit, would I be reusing the 2nd low pressure line?

Asked by John, March 27, 2014

Q: I just bought a 1978 Ford Bronco. While driving it home the power steering went out completely. Looking on fullsizebronco.com this site came up a couple times.

This kit I will be able to pull my current PS pump and bolt this right on? Are there any other parts I need to get this going? This looks like it has the reservoir on it. Sorry if this is a dumb questions. Just getting into rebuilding and restoring.

A: Provided the 78 is stock this kit will work. It has everything but the belt and some power steering fluid. You may want to read through the installation instructions just to get more familiar with the product. It's pretty straight forward and easy install.

The hose provided worked perfectly on my 77 Ford F150 Ranger XLT with a 351M . I read some of these saginaw pump upgrades require an extra fitting for the pressure hose at the back of the pump. Not this kit - it works perfectly and gives you everything you need except the return hose and the belt. I bought the return hose that was stock on my truck and it married up without difficulty to the new saginaw pump. Installation was easy. Some of the reviews indicate the upper bracket hole needs some modification but I think the manufacturer is now aware of this because the bracket I received was already modified. So there was no extra work. The pulley comes attached to the pump and does not need to be removed to attach the bracket. The #17555 hose they recommend from AutoZone was the right one. So yea, the whole thing was 2 thumbs up. Plus it is MUCH quieter and I can turn my 33x12.5x15's with with 1 finger on the wheel when the truck is in 'park' . I am very pleased. Its a no brainer upgrade compared to the old pump which I always thought was a poor design. My truck has headers and the pressure line off the original "oil can" pump was way too close to the header and most likely heated the fluid unnecessarily. This kit solved that issue completely.

Product came as advertised, install was simple and straight forward. Pump primed and bled out the air pretty easily, took a few drives before it quit whining and all the air was gone. It is now quiet and works excellently. Great customer service and fast shipping. A must have for your dentside with the factory steering pump, especially if you are running oversized tires.

I purchased the kit for my 1978 Bronco to try to get rid of an old noisy original pump that leaked . It all hooked up and works good, not whining like the old one would off and on. I think the instructions could have been a lot more detailed. Especially which bolts went where. The pulley was for a 3/8" belt but the P.S. belt was a 1/2" so it rode very high in the pulley. seems to work ok though. Would have liked a return line included but overall a good kit and I think it was a good upgrade.

The bolt that goes into the head is not long enough for my liking. Follow the instructions to mount pump to the bracket before mounting to the engine. The brace going to the water pump needed almost an inch spacer to line up with the pump bracket (I'm using an edelbrock water pump) and the holes were not far enough apart. Had to elongate the holes.

I purchased this kit for my 1977 f150 with a 400, I had to use the spacer that was with my original power steering pump and buy a longer bolt than was included with the kit. The only other parts I had to buy were a low side 3/8 hose and the belt. I've had it on and running for 2 weeks and love how quiet it is and simple is performs.

Own a 79 F150 and when the original pump started leaking I dreaded the thought of having to replace it. I went through the fun or should I say nightmare of bleeding the gearbox the first time. Remove the gearbox and hold it upright - seriously? What a pain. So happy this was as stated in the instructions. Total removal and install time of about 1-1 1/2 hours. Couldn't be happier. Thinking the Clydesdale Tie-Rod and Drag Link might be next. Thanks.

After purchasing this kit months ago, I finally got around to installing it. I had absolutely zero issues with it. The instructions were concise, and kit has every part you need except the belt. The only thing I wasn't smart enough to do was wait for the engine to cool down so I didn't get burned on the radiator while putting this kit on! This pump is so quiet, its like night and day compared to the stock plastic pump. Turns my 33's with a wimper.

I installed this kit on my 77 F-150 with the 351M engine. Like some others have commented, I did have to slot the upper pump brace to get it to line up with the water pump mounting bolt. Other than that small issue, the kit went together great. The hardware is high quality and everything was included sans fluid. The truck drives better than brand new and steers like butter. I am running 35's and even parked at an idle the steering is fast and smooth. Bleeding the system was a non event unlike the old style pumps and it runs super quiet as well. After fighting 5 pumps over the last 10 years, I wish that I had done this after my first stock pump failed. Great product and a seriously worthy upgrade to these old trucks.

After years of dealing with a whiny Cardone p/s pump, I decided to give this kit a try. As another reviewer found, the upper brace bar is too short to connect to the water pump bolt. I had to elongate the holes to make it stretch. Had to use a combination of other washers to make the kit work, but once installed, filled it with fluid (had prev flushed) and there was no bleeding necessary. It is now smooth and quiet and the steering turns with my pinky finger, even with 35" tires. It solved the problem, just wish they would correct the brace bar for a better fit and would be a bolt and go as they say. Be prepared for some trial and error in gettng it bolted and lined up. I got the 17540 belt from NAPA and it was a perfect fit. The ordering and shipping process was great.

I needed a new power steering pump to not invalidate the warranty on the rebuilt steering gear I was also replacing. Rebuilt pumps suck, and since a new stock pump is unavailable for my old Ford, this was it. The install was a pain, but that is typical of an item that isn't stock. The spacers weren't the correct width. The stabilizing bar was about 3/32 inch too short- just enough to give me grief. However, with 3/8" washers and a bit of trial and error, it is a perfect fit. No exaggeration- the pulley alignment is perfect on all 3 axes. It was also super easy to bleed the air out!! I was dreading this, but it ended up being the easiest part- even with a completely drained steering gear, inline filter, and hoses. My truck turns smoother, the steering is more responsive in rough terrain, and doesn't squeal when stressed. While the stock pump wasn't bad overall, it isn't in the same class as this one. Extremely pleased with the upgrade.
