Selecting an Early Bronco Water Pump

At WILD HORSES 4x4, we have several options available to replace the water pump in your 66-77 Ford Bronco. The primary question in selecting which water pump is best for your project is identifying the engine setup and performance needs of your Bronco.

Key Considerations:

• Factory 289 or 302 V8 Engine:
  If you're running a factory 289 or 302 V8 engine with the original front drive, the water pump outlet will exit on the passenger side. This water pump design is unique to the early Bronco, making identification of a stock pump relatively simple.

• Serpentine Front Drive:
  For those using a serpentine front drive, whether with the stock engine or a Ford 5.0L engine swap, the water outlet exits on the driver side.

  • In this setup, you’ll need either a cross-over lower radiator hose or a reverse outlet radiator.

  • Be sure the water pump matches the engine in use. Common options include the 84-93 Ford Mustang 5.0L or the 96-01 Ford Explorer 5.0L. We offer pumps for both setups.

• Stock 289 or 302 V8 Engine:

     • Best for harsh weather conditions or Broncos used for off-roading.
     • Features a unique impeller design that doubles flow rates at low RPM and idle.
     • Helps keep the engine cool, whether you're navigating rocky terrain or stuck in 5 o'clock traffic.

• Non-Stock Engines:
  We offer the FlowKooler Water Pumps if you are running a 84-93 Mustang 5.0L or 96-01 Explorer 5.0L engine swap. These water pumps feature the same custom impeller design as the early Bronco FlowKooler water pump, so you can rest assured you are getting the best cooling performance out of your new water pump.
