Classic Bronco Stock Bumpers: Factory Style with Modern Quality

Classic Bronco Stock Bumpers: Factory Style with Modern Quality

When it comes to restoring or upgrading your 1966-77 Ford Bronco, few parts define the classic look more than the front and rear bumpers. While aftermarket off-road bumpers get a lot of attention, many Bronco owners still want the clean, timeless look of stock-style bumpers. At WILD HORSES 4x4, we offer a full lineup of Early Bronco stock bumpers designed to match factory fitment while improving finish quality and durability.

1966 Bronco Bumper vs. 1967-77 Bronco Bumper

The 1966 Bronco bumper was unique, featuring straight edges on both sides. Unfortunately, this exact style is no longer manufactured, meaning the only way to achieve a bone-stock ‘66 restoration is by tracking down a good used original.

In 1967, Ford revised the design, tapering the ends of the bumper for better contour against the Bronco’s body. The 1967-77 Bronco bumpers not only look great but are also more functional. The taper reduces the chance of snagging on clothing—like pant legs—when walking past the truck, while also offering a sleeker appearance. For owners of 1966 Broncos, the later style bolts on perfectly, making it a practical and attractive replacement option.

Super Stock vs. Standard Bumpers

One of the biggest decisions when shopping stock-style bumpers is choosing between Super Stock and Standard options.

  • Super Stock bumpers eliminate the square holes in the center face. Those holes were originally designed for front bumperettes but were never used on rear bumpers. For an OE-correct setup, use Super Stock bumpers front and rear if you don’t plan on running bumper guards.

  • If you are running bumperettes, pair a Standard front bumper with a Super Stock rear bumper for the correct combination.

  • Keep in mind: the chrome finish on our Super Stock bumpers is of higher quality than on Standard bumpers. If you mix the two, the chrome will not match exactly. Both options are excellent, but Super Stock has the upper hand when it comes to finish.

Painted vs. Chrome Bumpers

From the factory, Broncos rolled out with either painted or chrome bumpers.

  • Painted bumpers were originally finished in Wimbledon White (Ford code M1619). Our paintable bumpers come in a black e-coat, designed as a base for proper paint prep. Some customers run them in e-coat, but for the most authentic look, we recommend painting them in Wimbledon White.

  • Chrome bumpers remain a favorite for their timeless shine. While many aftermarket chrome bumpers fall short in quality, WILD HORSES sets a higher standard with our show-quality plating process.

Show-Quality Chrome: The WILD HORSES Difference

What truly separates our chrome bumpers is the five-step nickel plating process, which goes far beyond the standard three-step method used by most manufacturers.

  • Step 1 – Strike Layer (Adhesion Foundation): Creates a strong bond between the steel and the nickel plating to prevent peeling or flaking.

  • Step 2 – Semi-Bright Nickel (Corrosion Resistance): Provides a corrosion-resistant base layer with excellent ductility.

  • Step 3 – Second Strike (Bond Reinforcement): Ensures uniform adhesion for durability and long-term strength.

  • Step 4 – Bright Nickel (Mirror Finish): Adds the high-polish luster Bronco enthusiasts want for show-quality restorations.

  • Step 5 – Microporous Layer (Corrosion Dispersion): Disperses corrosive elements across tiny pores, dramatically improving longevity.

This process delivers superior adhesion, long-lasting corrosion resistance, and a beautiful finish that holds up to the test of time—perfect for both daily drivers and show-ready restorations.
