How the Early Bronco Fuel Selector Valve Works

Important: The small pointed end of the lever (not the long handle) indicates which tank is selected. This is one of the most common points of confusion.

• Pointer toward passenger side = main tank (factory routing)

• Pointer toward driver side = auxiliary tank (factory routing)

This valve simply directs fuel from one inlet port to the outlet. Which tank is “main” or “auxiliary” depends entirely on how your fuel lines are routed.

If your Bronco has had fuel system work over the years, the selector may appear to work backwards. In many cases, previous owners have swapped or rerouted fuel lines. Always verify hose routing if the valve position doesn’t match the expected tank.

Fuel Selector Valve Troubleshooting

• Wrong tank selected? Fuel lines may be reversed at the valve or user is trying to point the lever and not the pointer to the selected tank.

Note on Indicator Plate Orientation: The selector plate installs upside down from what most expect—this is factory-correct. It was designed this way so you can read it while leaning forward over the seat.

Historical Note: Some 1973 Ford Broncos used a 6-port selector valve (feed and return). This 3-port valve can replace those units, though it eliminates return lines. Most original return systems have already been bypassed, making this the most practical replacement.
