Early Bronco Stock Gas Tank Specifciations

From the factory, 66-77 Ford Broncos came with either one or two fuel tanks. All early Broncos came with a rear fuel tank located in-between the frame rails just in front of the rear bumper. The rear main fuel tank on a 66-77 Ford Bronco held approximately 13 gallons of fuel. The early Bronco rear stock gas tank was mounted using a single strap with a j-bolt to secure the tank to the Bronco. This gas tank was galvanized steel and an optional skid plate was offered for those looking for a bit of extra protection for the fuel tank.

Early Broncos equipped with a secondary fuel tank came with a plastic gas tank located under the driver side seat. This front auxiliary fuel tank offered an additional 8 gallons of fuel capacity increasing the early Bronco's fuel range by 60%. The front auxiliary early Bronco fuel tank was held in place with two straps and j-bolts. Because the tank was plastic, the auxilary fuel tank always came with a skid plate to protect the tank not only from rocks and road hazards, but also to prevent the mounting straps from cutting into the fuel tank.

Because of the exponential increase in fuel capacity that an auxiliary gas tank offered and the limited fuel range one could expect from an early Bronco with just a rear main fuel tank, most early Broncos came with the dual fuel tank option.
