Early Bronco Air Conditioning Kit by Vintage Air

If you're tired of sweating it out in your 66-77 Bronco, make the upgrade today to this 1966-77 Ford Bronco Air Conditioning Kit. This custom A/C kit from Vintage Air offers modern climate control for your classic ride, replacing the outdated factory heater with high-performance air conditioning, heating, and dehumidified defrost. Whether you go with the easy-install underdash version or the clean, custom 4-vent plenum setup, this system is built to keep you comfortable no matter where your Bronco takes you. Cold air, better heat, and a factory-style fit—this is the A/C upgrade your Bronco deserves.

The Vintage Air Gen 5 SureFit™ Air Conditioning Kit is a great upgrade for any 66-77 Ford Bronco. The early Bronco never came with air conditioning from the factory, though there were dealer add-on early Bronco AC upgrades available. The climate control system in the early Bronco was extremely basic with a simple defrost and underperforming heater assembly.

  • Choose from Underdash A/C or 4-vent Plenum for In-Dash A/C

    • Underdash Version: We offer this air conditioning kit in two versions. The most common includes a housing for the air conditioning vents that spans the underside of the Bronco's dash. This is the most simple version to install and requires the least amount of modification to the Bronco.

    • Customizable 4-Vent Version: The other version we offer is a 4-vent plenum air conditioning kit which allows you to install four air conditioning vents in or under your dash or in a custom console. This is great for the DIY Bronco owner who wants to put in the extra work for a cleaner installed look. Both versions look great when installed properly and are a matter of personal preference.

  • Complete Climate Control System for your Early Bronco: The Vintage Air Early Bronco A/C Kit replaces the full heater assembly in your Bronco with a true climate control system.

    • High Performance Air Conditioning: This air conditioning system produces excellent cold air volume.

    • Electronically Controlled Heater and Dehumidified Defrost: Ensure your Bronco stays at the temperature of your liking any time or anywhere.

Upgrade your 66-77 Ford Bronco with the Vintage Air Gen 5 SureFit A/C Kit. - Complete climate control with cold air conditioning, heater & dehumidified defrost.

1966–1977 Ford Bronco SBF - 289, 302, 351W*

*Designed for use with the stock 289 or 302 Ford V8 engine. This will also work with Ford 351W with potential minor modification. If you are running a different motor in your early Bronco, we can special order this kit for you without the compressor bracket and provide universal hoses to route them where they are needed for your custom air conditioning setup.

Potential Modifications During Installation:

The Vintage Air SureFit™ early Bronco air conditioning kits fit great inside the cabin of your Bronco. Just pull the old heater system out and replace it with the Vintage Air evaporator system. It's important to note that there may be some modifications needed particularly when you go to install the compressor and condenser in the engine compartment. Vintage Air provides an excellent start for this, but due to the fact there are so many variables inside the engine bay, the following common modifications may be needed as well as other unforeseen modifications if your engine setup is not typical.

  • Upper Radiator Hose Routing: We offer a custom radiator hose that simplifies this process. We highly recommend purchasing our #495005 Upper Radiator Hose for Vintage Air for this purpose.

  • Condenser Clearance: The condenser fits within a very tight spot in front of the radiator and behind the core support. It is likely you will need to modify the mounts and possibly the core support to fit the condenser. You will also want to pay attention to the hood safety latch as it may require trimming to avoid damaging the a/c condenser.

  • Compressor Clearance: Mock up the a/c compressor and make sure that it properly clears your engine fan and that the pulley is in alignment. If adjustment is needed, you will need to modify the spacers that come with the bracket to push the compressor back. You will also need to make matching adjustments to the power steering bracket if applicable to ensure all pulleys are aligned. When this adjustment is made, you may also find the need to clearance the front of your valve covers and/or the rear compressor mounting bolts, particularly if you have cast aluminum valve covers.

Additional modifications may be required to install this air conditioning kit in your early Bronco based on the current setup of your specific vehicle. Installation should be performed by a qualified mechanic.

Installed the Vintage Air A/C kit in my 1972 Ford Bronco and it was a great upgrade! There's definitely some custom mounting that has to be done to fit the condensor, drier, etc., but not sure there would have been any way to avoid that. Overall, a game changer as far as comfort driving the Bronco. Not only is the AC a great addition, but the heater and defroster are much better than the weak stock system.

Vintage Air A/C Kits: The Coolest Mod for Your Early Bronco

There’s nothing quite like taking your early Bronco out for a summer drive—until the temps climb into triple digits and your classic ride starts feeling like a rolling oven. Factory air conditioning? Not an option back in the day. And most aftermarket systems? Let’s just say they range from “sketchy” to “install-it-if-you-hate-yourself.”

At WILD HORSES 4x4, we’ve been neck-deep in early Bronco projects for decades. We’ve installed other so-called "Early Bronco" A/C kits only to find they were really just universal systems slapped with a Bronco label. The result? Frustrating installs and a lot of unnecessary improvisation.

Don’t get us wrong - the Vintage Air SureFit Gen V kit doesn’t just fall into place. The Bronco was never designed to house A/C, and there’s still some work required to make any system fit. But with the Vintage Air kit, you're working with the most Bronco-specific framework available. It fits better, routes cleaner, and comes with the confidence that hundreds of Bronco owners have already tackled the same install - and lived to tell about it.

A Better Blueprint for Classic Comfort

The strength of the Vintage Air kit lies in its design. Rather than forcing a universal box to work in your dash, the SureFit system is engineered for tight spaces like the Bronco’s interior and engine bay. The included brackets, vents, and routing options give you a solid foundation to build from - eliminating most of the guesswork and minimizing the custom fab work required with lesser kits.

Key perks include:

  • Electronic Controls – No more fiddling with vacuum lines or stiff cables. The control system is clean, modern, and reliable.

  • High-Output Cooling – Gen V tech means more airflow and better temperature control, even in brutally hot weather.

  • Under-Dash Clearance – The compact design doesn’t overwhelm your footwell or butcher your dash layout.

  • Cleaner Fitment – The evaporator and condenser mount points are thoughtfully located to simplify hose routing and installation.

  • Full Climate Control System - The Vintage Air SureFit A/C Kit is more than an air conditioning upgrade, it replaces the weak early Bronco heater and defroster with an upgraded heater and dehumidified defrost system for a full climate control upgrade.

Why Buy from WILD HORSES 4x4?

We don’t just sell these kits - we use them, install them, and support customers running them in real Broncos. Here’s why ordering from WILD HORSES is a smart move:

  • Stocked and Ready to Ship
While most vendors dropship from the manufacturer (which can lead to long waits), we generally keep these kits in stock for faster delivery. No surprises, no long delays.

  • Honest Order Updates
If we ever do need to dropship your order, we’ll let you know right away so you can plan your build accordingly.

  • Bronco-Specific Knowledge
You’re not buying from a generic truck parts warehouse. We live and breathe early Broncos, and it shows in the support and advice we provide.

Pro Tip for Your Install

A good serpentine front drive setup can make a huge difference during install. It simplifies belt alignment and gives you cleaner access to the compressor. If you’re planning a full engine bay refresh, consider ordering the Holley Mid-Mount Accessory Drive System to pair with your new A/C kit.

Bottom Line: It’s the Best Starting Point

No A/C kit is “easy” when it comes to an early Bronco - but the Vintage Air SureFit Gen V system offers the best starting point by a long shot. It’s the most dialed-in, Bronco-specific option out there, and paired with support from WILD HORSES, it’s a project you can actually see through without losing your mind.

Order your kit now and bring real comfort to your classic Bronco without rolling the dice on a universal nightmare.
