Early Bronco Winch & Towing

Early Bronco Winches & Towing Accessories

The first important consideration in choosing a winch for your 66-77 Ford Bronco is the winch manufacturer's line pull rating. This is a combination of the mechanical capacity of the winch and the tensile strength of the line on the drum. It's important part to remember is that as a rule the rated capacity is based on the first layer of winch cable (the one closest to the drum). Typically, there are three or four layers and that first one has the "lowest" gear ratio and the most pull.

Selecting the right winch for your early Bronco: A quality winch is essential for any off-road vehicle and early Broncos are no different. We offer winches from trusted brands like Mile Marker, Warn and Smittybilt. The rule-of-thumb minimum weight rating when buying a winch is to take your GVW (that's Gross Vehicle Weight, not curb weight) and multiply it by 1.5. At Wild Horses 4x4, we recommend multiplying your GVW by two or more to be sure you have the pulling power you need. The stock early Bronco had a GVW of 3900 to 4900 lbs depending on the year model and package. If your truck's GVW is 5,000 lbs, you will want to select a winch that has a 7,500 - 10,000 or more rated line pull.
