Does the top get narrower in the rear or is that an optical illusion of the picture? If it does narrow does the narrowing serve a purpose or is it just for aesthetics?

They do taper a bit to the rear. The cage portion is naturally narrower than the windshield frame, typically anyway, so less material is needed in the rear, for even coverage.
