what material are these made of? how hard will it be to locate where they have to be welded? will welding them to the axle ruin my seals?

They are steel just like the originals. Location is up to the installer. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. You may or may not have seals in the area where the wedges weld on. If you do it's best to replace them.
