I can't get the lower joint seated fully on the steering box. Can get it about half way on. Is this correct? Don't want to hit it with anything that could damage box...

Sometimes the joints are tighter than others. You may try some light sanding on the input shaft and make sure it is smooth and free of debris. You can use some light force if needed, but we wouldn't recommend and serious hitting.
