Ford 302 EFI Conversion With Holley Sniper

A real Bronco. A carburetor coming off. A closer look at the work ahead.

Thinking about fuel injection for your Ford 302? It helps to see the job on a real Bronco. The throttle body gets plenty of attention. The fuel tank, ignition, and wiring deserve a good look, too.

Broken Bronco Garage walks through the conversion on Shrek, Tyson’s lime green 1974 Bronco. Its 302 V8 gets a two-barrel Holley Sniper EFI system, HyperSpark ignition components, and a Wild Horses M1A1 fuel tank. Tyson’s goal is reliability. He isn’t chasing a bigger horsepower number.

What This Ford 302 EFI Conversion Uses

Here is the setup shown in the video. It gives you a place to start when planning your build. Confirm the exact parts for your engine before ordering.

Engine 302-cubic-inch V8 in a 1974 Bronco.
EFI Holley Sniper two-barrel throttle body injection.
Intake Existing four-barrel intake with a two-barrel adapter.
Fuel Tank Wild Horses M1A1 with an in-tank electric fuel pump.
Fuel Lines Feed and return lines with AN fittings.
Ignition HyperSpark distributor, ignition box, and coil.
Sensors and Setup Oxygen sensor, coolant temperature sensor, and handheld controller.

Before choosing a Ford 302 fuel injection conversion kit, check what comes in the box. Confirm the intake fit, fuel system requirements, and ignition compatibility. The right combination matters more than a long parts list.

Start With the Fuel Supply

The crew begins at the back of the Bronco. They prepare the M1A1 tank, install the in-tank pump, and run the fuel lines toward the engine. They point viewers to a separate Wild Horses video for the tank assembly. You can watch that video here.

Shrek uses a feed line to supply the EFI unit and a return line to send excess fuel back to the tank. The crew also plans how to use the Bronco’s existing tank vent.

Plan the complete fuel system before ordering. Follow the instructions for your exact EFI unit and tank. Include the pump, filtration, pressure regulation, venting, and suitable fuel hose and fittings in that plan. Your layout may differ from Shrek’s.

Fit the Holley Sniper to the Intake

With the old carburetor removed, the crew installs the two-barrel throttle body. Shrek already has a four-barrel intake with a two-barrel adapter. That is an important detail if you are comparing Holley Sniper EFI kits for a Ford 302.

Engine size alone does not settle the fitment question. Check the mounting pattern and any adapter requirements for the unit you choose. Include the throttle linkage and air cleaner clearance in that check.

Tyson chose this setup with reliability in mind. Use your engine’s needs and your goals to guide your own choice.

Decide How You Want to Handle Ignition

Shrek also receives a HyperSpark distributor, ignition box, and coil. With this setup, the Sniper system controls ignition timing. That adds another part of the project beyond replacing the carburetor.

It also changes which wiring instructions apply. Holley supports several ignition configurations. Follow the diagram for your exact combination. A wiring example for a different distributor may not match yours.

Give the Wiring Its Own Time

The crew brings in Pops to help sort through the electrical connections. Two details get special attention: the main power connections at the battery and a switched power source that stays powered while cranking.

Holley’s guidance calls for the EFI main power and ground connections at the battery. The switched power source must remain powered in both run and crank. Verify the source on your Bronco instead of copying a wire color from the video.

The crew also connects the oxygen sensor and coolant temperature sensor. Follow the instructions for your model when placing and wiring these sensors.

Keep the Holley Sniper installation instructions handy. This article and the videos provide a project overview to read alongside the instructions for your parts.

Set Up the Handheld for Your Engine

Tyson wants the handheld tucked away in the glove box. The crew routes its cable through the firewall and leaves the screen accessible for initial setup.

At about 19:23 in the EFI video, they select eight cylinders and enter 302 cubic inches. They choose a 750 rpm target idle, the stock/mild cam setting, and HyperSpark ignition.

Those entries describe Shrek. Enter the actual details for your engine and follow the prompts for your system. Before attempting a start, the crew primes the fuel system and checks the lines and connections for leaks.

Questions About a Ford 302 EFI Conversion

Can a carbureted Ford 302 be converted to EFI?

Yes. This build shows a carbureted 302 receiving Holley Sniper throttle body injection. The project includes the fuel supply, sensors, wiring, and ignition setup as well as the throttle body itself.

Does this video show multi-port fuel injection?

No. This installation uses a two-barrel throttle body EFI unit. It does not show a multi-port injection conversion.

Do I need the same fuel tank and ignition?

Shrek uses the M1A1 tank and HyperSpark components. Your combination depends on the EFI system you choose and the parts already on your Bronco. Check those requirements before buying.

Will any Ford 302 EFI kit fit my intake?

Check the exact mounting pattern and the requirements of the EFI unit. This Bronco uses a four-barrel intake with a two-barrel adapter. Confirm your own intake, linkage, and air cleaner clearance.

How long does the installation take?

The crew spreads the work across several after-work sessions. Tank work, fuel lines, wiring, and your existing setup can all affect the schedule. Give yourself room to check the details before the first start.
