Steel 6 Degree Shims

Price:

Description

These steel 6 degree tapered shims are 2 1/4" wide and machined specially for WILD HORSES to fit the unique Bronco size springs. These are not cast, and will hold up under extreme conditions. They include both 3/8" and 7/16" center bolts. WILD HORSES rear springs use the larger 7/16" bolts. Most stock and aftermarket rear springs will use 3/8" center bolts.

Tapered shims are used to help correct rear pinion angle, especially after changes are made to the rear springs or rear axle housings. Often when installing a rear suspension lift, the rear pinion angle will move downward. This may be just visible or you may feel a vibration in the driveshaft, especially under deceleration. We've found 6° to be the perfect correction for most modified Broncos. With the double-cardan style rear driveshaft found on all 66 to 77 Broncos, the proper angle is about 1 or 2 degrees below the driveshaft centerline. This angle can only be checked with the full working weight of the vehicle on the suspension. It can't be checked while still in the air, or with only partial weight of a vehicle still in the process of restoration. Bolt these shims on the spring pack above the perches of the rear housing with the thin edge pointing forward.

Note: don't use information for other vehicles that state a zero angle is required for double-cardan shafts. Broncos with leaf spring suspensions work best with this 1 to 2 degree minimal downward offset.

6 degrees of shim, 1 gallon of sweat

The product was flawless and appeared to be of good quality. The installation (in my driveway, by myself) was a bit of a workout. The "how to" video was helpful. Took about 3 1/2 hours, but I'm no speed monkey. Biggest challenge for me, (since I really didn't want to disconnect my frame to differential brake hose) was getting the third member low enough to slide the shim in without stretching the brake hose too far. Barely made it by loosening both sides, but only shimming one side at a time. I am pushing 60 years old, so when about the last step is to torque the U-bolts (8 nuts at 100+ foot-pounds), that's where you will feel it the next day. Hoping these shims will increase the life of rear driveline U-joints. Changed my rear U-joint angle from about 12 degrees to about 4.

I installed a 2.5 lift on my 70 Bronco and wasn't comfortable with the increase in drive shaft angle. After some measurements I figured the 6 degree shims would work best. The Wild Horses kit was the most complete kit I could find and the most affordable. The install was smooth as could be expected and the instructions were clear as water. I couldn't be happier with the product.

Product seemed to be great but when I received them but I only received the 3/8" bolts and our leaf springs had a 1/4" hole so getting the holes to accept the 3/8" bolt without having the option for the 7'16" bolts was a nightmare...... I had to use about $50 in drill bits to accomplish the job.

Seem very strong!!!

These shims are steel so they can be permanent. I used them on a 2.5 inch lift with a longer transmission, so they helped with by pinion angle.

Why didn't I do this sooner?

After installing a 2.5" suspension lift, I had a small vibration from the rear driveshaft. I measured the pinion angle and it was too steep so I ordered these. Installation was quick and easy and they got rid of the vibration.

With running a ZF and 3.5 SL, the pinion to driveshaft angle was severe, +9 deg. These 6 deg shims did the trick! Now its 3-4 deg.

I needed my pins fast. you guys got them to me just like you said by Wednesday. I left the next mourning for an event in NH. And while checking the pin I broke 3 weeks earlier, I noticed that the other side had broke, I had not even gotten on the trail, and needed a new pin. It all worked out, then I split my steering box for the second time, still had a blast.
