AUTOMATIC C4
The early Bronco had the option of an automatic transmission from 1973-77. Ford used the C4. All early Bronco C4's were column shifted and it should be noted that the Bronco C4's used the 164 tooth, 28oz. imbalance flexplate and these C4's were the pan fill style.
Pan fill C4's receive transmission fluid through the dip stick tube which goes into the right side of the transmission pan. Thus the term "pan fill".
During the same time period Ford also used a case fill style of the C4 (transmission fluid goes into the transmission through the dip stick tube going into the case of the transmission). The case fill style was not stock in the Bronco. The case fill style was available with 157 and 164 tooth flexplates and corresponding bellhousings. Torque converters were also particular to the different flexplates.
With the C4 you can build a serious heavy duty transmission in a small package. Many aftermarket parts are available to beef up these units. It's a favorite from rock racers to daily drivers.
Here are approximate dimensions for everything we could think of that might pertain to the C4. You can use this chart to figure out OAL (over all length) of available combinations.

203/Atlas Super Crawler
You've got to be kidding right? No, we're not! Think of the possibilities. How low can you go? This kit includes everything you need to hook up a 10 spline Atlas to a 203. Just pick the 8349 203/10-Spline Atlas Kit.
If you already have your Atlas we have the #8345 10-Spline Atlas Input Shaft Kit you will need to make this work. The Crossmember and shifter will need to be made by you or your installer because an NP 435/203/Atlas combo would be approximately 37" long from the front of the 435 to the end of the CV yoke on the Atlas. That is about 8" longer than stock.
Transmission Conversions
Wild Horses supports the do-it-yourselfer by offering individual parts and adapters. Please keep in mind many of these parts have been specifically fabricated to go with other parts we offer. It will be up to you to determine if these parts will suit your needs.
Early Broncos use what is called a "Flare Case" C4. As such the bellhousings we carry will be for this type of C4. This style will also go along with the 164 tooth flexplate and pan mounted dip stick/tube. The tranny to bellhousing bolt pattern will be different than the "Step Case" style C4. This style C4 uses a case mounted dip stick/tube and will have a 157 tooth flexplate. When converting from a manual transmission to a C4 automatic, you will want to consider:
* Torque converter.
* C4 Transmission.
* A/T Starter.
* A/T Transmission Cooler.
* A/T Transmission Lines.
* Shifter (floor or column).
* A/T T-case Input Shaft.
* Neutral Safety Switch.
* A/T Pedal Assembly.
* You may need a new carburetor to use Kick-Down.

Competition C4 Atlas Shorty

This is a great kit for competition rock racers. The output shaft included in the kit must be installed into a custom built fully manual C4. The length of the kit will eliminate the use of the governor assembly and therefore, it must be used with a manual valve body. The governor housing will require a lathe modification and a mill/drill press modification. Considering you can also order your Atlas with a short tailshaft (no speedometer gears) this is a real saver of space.
The kit includes what you see in the photo. You get the C4 output shaft, adapters, hardware and a head start for fabricating your crossmember.

C4 Reverse Manual Valve Body

Art Carr Off Road Valve Body. If you want to build a competition rock racer this will be the valve body you want for your C4. It's a manual, reverse pattern, off-road with compression braking valve body. So, what is all that and why would you want it? First off, the manual part of the equation basically turns your automatic into a clutchless manual transmission. You will have to shift up and down through the gears. This allows the driver complete control over the shifting points of the transmission. Next, there is the advantage of using a reverse pattern valve body. This gives you the P R N 1 2 3 shifting pattern. This comes in handy off-road when you are about to lose control and perhaps go over on the side, but instead, you make a quick shift into reverse (because reverse and first are now right next to each other) and save the rig from rolling over. This is one area where the auto has a big advantage over the manual tranny. The compression braking comes into play going down hill. You will be able to hold whatever gear you are in without the governor kicking you into the next gear and speeding up the vehicle. Really, whether you are in competition or just weekend wheeling this is a great off-road valve body. As long as you don't mind shifting through the gears, these work great on the street too.

Winters C4 Shifter

We tried the others and came to the conclusion that the Winters shifters are the most durable and dependable A/T shifters we have ever used. In our opinion, there simply is nothing better. Get stuck on a rocky hill where you need to get the transmission back in reverse with some of the lever lockout type shifters and you will see why you need the Winters. The same shifter can be used in standard pattern P R N 3 2 1 or competition pattern P R N 1 2 3.
The shifter is pictured in a shifter housing. Shifter housings are sold separately because many people choose to do custom installs and make their own covers or mount the shifter in a custom tunnel.
